Second draft of the Application Letter

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing in response to your advertisement on El Mercurio in the May 10, 2013. I would like to be considered for the position of English teacher in this primary school. I studied English at Pontificia Universidad Católica de Valparaíso and I have some experience at teaching in public and private primary schools, so I hope this would qualify me for the position.

I am an English teacher graduated from Pontificia Universidad Católica de Valparaíso three years ago. Aside from the English program, I have made some courses about group management and didactics. Indeed, I have a huge interest in motivation, interaction and participation of children, which allows me to have the opportunity to develop my abilities in this area.

After my studies in English program I worked in a public school for three years with primary and secondary students, therefore I have a wide knowledge in the student’s behavior. During this period, I had a closer relationship with primary school students, and I had the opportunity to learn more about their characteristics, needs, habits, likes, and behavior. Thus, I learned deeply how to work with them and teach them according to everything already mentioned in order to have a better learning. I consider myself a responsible, committed and goal-driven person; indeed, I have succeeded in everything I have set out to achieve and I always do my best.

The enclosed résumé provides more information about my education and experience, but I would appreciate the opportunity to meet with you at your convenience to discuss my application. You can reach me after noon since Monday to Thursday at 74726064 or leave a message anytime at macaa.g@live.cl.

Yours faithfully,

Paola Gutiérrez

Second draft of the Writing Test

Ten years ago, scientists started to do a research on a pregnant woman whose baby had been diagnosed with a certain kind of mental disease. The woman started doing a treatment in which the main factor of cure was music. During the whole pregnancy, scientists went through all the processes until they found out how music was healing the mental disorder of this little child. Finally, they discovered that the baby was born with less percentage of this disease than before just because of the effects of music, which confirms that music heals people in a certain way.

It is known that music has the power of provoking certain changes in people’s brain because it can make them feel so, through these feelings, even if it is sadness, happiness or anger, signals are being sent to their brains and this can has several effects. This can be noticed because people feel different, they experiment a new sensation that was only provide by music. But many people think that these changes are not a consequence of the music’s effects, as music can only produce changes in the moment that a song is being playing.

It is possible that music can only affect people in a temporary way, but in the case of this woman, music was the protagonist of this long and constant process she had to go through. That is to say that any factor can produce multiple consequences if it is used in a routinely way. This case is similar to the Mozart Effect, where classical music provokes changes in children before they had born.

All things considered, people can find a helpful way in music if it is to do with some mental disease because, based on evidence and studies, we all can see that music can heal people. Therefore, people should trust more in music and start to use it in other aspects of their daily lives, not only for an entertainment reason.

Second draft of the Formal Letter

Dear Sir/Madam,

I am writing to you because I am very interested in the holiday 'Antartic Cruise', and I would like you to give me some information I need to know about this fantastic trip.

First of all, I am going to go with three friends, so I was wondering if you could tell me the price for four passengers, what it includes and when the best time to travel is.

Secondly, in the magazine advertisement it is not clear what kind of accommodation is available in the cruise, so could you give me the options of the different types of rooms? I would like to reserve 4 rooms, if possible.

Thirdly, I am a vegetarian and I would be grateful if you could include a special menu with vegetarian food, unless there is only one unchangeable choice.

Finally, it is the first time I am going to travel on a cruise, so could you please tell me if the safety of this trip can be guaranteed?

I look forward to hearing from you.

Yours faithfully,
Paola Gutiérrez

Second draft of the "Description of an event"

As every year in the university, there is a traditional event organized by second-year students from every program to receive freshmen. This is a special instance to meet, share and have fun with all of them, who are going to be our classmates and future colleagues. This huge event is well known as “mechoneo”.

This year, my second-year classmates of English program and I organized several activities for this special day starting with “Café Convers”, which is a reception where classmates can talk and eat; and different games in which freshmen have to find their respective godparents. Then, it concluded with a ride to “Jardín Botánico” where there were many fun activities.

One of the most significant and special moment of the “mechoneo” was the godparent-godchild meeting. There, all the freshmen were given a half of their portrait shots and they had to find the other half of the photograph, which was with their respective parents. Here is when we wanted to show them how important they are and that we want to be a strong support for them.

I personally think that this event was very successful and it was necessary for the union of all the English program’s students, which makes it not only a big group of colleagues, but friends for life.

Second draft of the argumentative essay

In Chile, there has always been a persistent tendency to think women are not equal to men in several aspects; therefore, most of Chilean people devalue the women’s rights. The same happens with the International Women’s Day, which is not properly celebrated and valued by the vast majority of the country.

Some people say International Women’s Day is properly celebrated, because commercial shops take advantage of this instance to put in lower prices women’s clothes, accessories, etc. And there are others who say it is properly celebrated because the government reminds us the women’s rights and that this field has to improve.

The most important and essential reason of why this day is not properly celebrated is because a great number of persons who you ask about this day, they do not even know when it is celebrated. If the government wants to make of this day a big event, they need to make sure that all of the citizens know about this international day. Moreover, this day is just other instance for shops to make big sales, so it is not anything else than a commercial concept.

All things considered, we cannot say that International Women’s Day has been celebrated in a correct way with all the value that it deserves. The national government should make a real effort and make women feel that they really deserve the principal character of the whole humanity.
